Expert advice, practical solutions and valuable technical resources are available through your RWTA membership!
Through RWTA's affiliation with the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA), RWTA Members have access to a wealth of cold storage industry expertise, including the GCCA's Council of Scientific Advisors; a network of specialists who can help answer technical questions about refrigerated warehousing, food freezing, storage, handling and cold chain operations. And these aren't just theoretical questions. The advice addresses real operational challenges faced by cold chain businesses every day.
Ask the Experts! Here is a practical example, ‘Can frozen French fries be stored alongside frozen fish without absorbing unwanted odours?’
Dr Michael Jahncke, Chairman of the GCCA Council of Scientific Advisors and a specialist in fish products, recently addressed this very question and his advice highlights three important considerations:
Temperature: Both products should be fully frozen to at least -18°C before being placed into frozen storage.
Packaging: Packaging must be intact and suitable for the products to minimise the risk of odour transfer and cross-contamination.
Storage separation: Fish and French Fries should not be intermingled. Store them on separate racks with sufficient space between them.
It's a straightforward example of how specialist knowledge can help operators protect product quality, reduce risk and maintain appropriate storage practices.
